Duomo di Orvieto

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Orvieto is a town of 21,043 inhabitants in the province of Terni, in Umbria.
The Duomo of Orvieto is the cathedral of Orvieto, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture in central Italy.

The building

The church, begun in 1290 by order of Pope Nicholas IV in order to give place to the worthy corporal of the miracle of Bolsena, lasted for nearly a century. Designed in the Romanesque style by Arnolfo di Cambio, in principle the direction of the work was entrusted to Fra Bevignate from Perugia. In 1310 he was appointed to head the yard Lorenzo Maitani: its magnificent facade is to design the current seen as a kind of triptych embellished with mosaics and sculptures, and open the center by the magnificent rose window. The sculptured reliefs, are attributed to Maitani himself and several minor artists of the fourteenth century. The mosaics, including that of the peak with the Coronation of the Virgin, have been heavily restored and rebuilt over the centuries. Remarkable is the central portal, framed as the two side by a deep conch, and covered with bronze plates that tell the works of mercy.
Geography
The city of Orvieto is located in the south-western Umbria, in the province of Terni, on the border with the province of Viterbo in Lazio. Orvieto is established on a cliff of tuff, 325 m above sea level, overlooking the valley below where the rivers Paglia and Chiani just before it joins the Tiber. This enormous platform brownish volcanic tuff, which is raised from twenty to fifty yards from the plane of the campaign was created by the eruption of some volcanoes, which deposited huge quantities of material.
With 281 km ² of area, is one of the fifty largest towns of Italy. The highest point is Mount Peglia (837 m), bordering the municipality of San Venanzo. The territory of Orvieto is part of Mountain Community Mount Peglia and Selva di Meana and part of it persists in the Tiber River Park, born in Umbria regional park as a protected area of the WWF in 1990.
